Overview: YouTube Channel Research with Rank Kiwi
Rank Kiwi analyzes public YouTube channels to spot breakout videos and Shorts that dramatically outperformed a channel's normal view baseline.
Rather than relying on YouTube's default chronological upload order, Rank Kiwi calculates the channel's non-skewed median views and assigns an Outlier Score to every catalog item.
Channel Detection & Supported Surfaces
Rank Kiwi activates when navigating to verified YouTube channel surfaces:
- Channel Videos Tab:
youtube.com/@channel/videos — For long-form uploads.
- Channel Shorts Tab:
youtube.com/@channel/shorts — For vertical short-form videos.
- Channel Home:
youtube.com/@channel — Detects channel metadata and prompts navigation to the dedicated videos feed.
Pro-Tip: YouTube maintains separate algorithms and distribution patterns for long-form videos versus Shorts. To get statistically pure median baselines, analyze the /videos tab and /shorts tab in separate research passes.
Long-Form Videos vs. YouTube Shorts
Rank Kiwi automatically adapts its extraction logic based on the active YouTube surface:
Long-Form Videos
Scans horizontal video uploads, extracting view counts, publish dates (e.g., "3 days ago" or "2 months ago"), video durations, titles, and maximum resolution thumbnail assets.
YouTube Shorts
Scans the vertical Shorts feed on the channel page, extracting public Shorts view counts and titles. Shorts often feature higher view volume than long-form, so calculating a Shorts-specific median prevents distortion.

High-Resolution Thumbnail Downloads
Study packaging, typography, and visual hooks by downloading clean thumbnail imagery.
From the video detail view, click Download Thumbnail. Rank Kiwi retrieves the maximum resolution image asset available (up to maxresdefault.jpg at 1280×720) and triggers a clean browser download.
Usage Policy: Thumbnails are downloaded for study, layout analysis, and research reference. Do not republish or duplicate third-party thumbnail art as your own.
YouTube Platform Boundaries & Limitations
Rank Kiwi operates within standard YouTube web constraints:
- Search Results Pages: Rank Kiwi is designed for creator channels and catalogs, not search engine results across multiple unrelated creators.
- Private & Unlisted Content: Rank Kiwi cannot view or analyze unlisted or private videos that do not appear on the creator's public channel tabs.
- Dynamic Infinite Scrolling: YouTube dynamically loads videos as you scroll. If your requested sample depth requires more items than currently rendered, Rank Kiwi gently prompts the feed until the required batch is collected.
